The History or Marquell Kennels

The first dog I owned was a cocker spaniel purchased from Joyce Hill of the famous Glowhill Cocker Spaniels now owned by Jane Mitchell. I was 11 years old and decided to show her. She was a black and white ticked cocker and proudly entered her at the Derby County Show under a well known judge Harry Dunn.

A few years later I went to North Midland and Eastern Counties Cocker Club show at the Hazelwood Equestrian Centre where I met the late Phyllis Masters (Styvechale). This lady was to have a huge influence on me. I was invited to go and spend 2 weeks at her kennels and loved it.

I started working weekends there and in time bought 2 blue roan bitches and later purchased a solid colour girl. The love of cockers was born.

My introduction into the Hungarian Vizsla came from spending time with Anne & Alan Webster ( Asquanne) who had this “unusual type of dog” as I described them then. I soon realised I was really fond of this breed and a couple of years later purchased my first one from Anne.

The Sussex Spaniel joined us much later. It was 1994 and I attended Leeds Championship Dog Show and was watching the judging of cockers when the sussex spaniel caught my eye. I went to watch the judging and saw a beautiful bitch owned by Chris Bexon and was smitten. I then went on to purchase my first sussex and have enjoyed the breed ever since.
